Avon Lake K-8 School Stays Fit While Raising Funds for Science Curriculum

Students and Faculty at St. Joseph School in Avon Lake Participate in 2nd Annual Walk-a-Thon on May 23

AVON LAKE, Ohio, April 25, 2011 – St. Joseph K-8 School in Avon Lake is getting fit while raising money for Catholic education. On Monday, May 23, 2011, students, faculty, staff and family members will participate in the school’s second annual Walk-a-Thon fundraiser.

Starting at 9:30 am, participants will walk a designated course for one hour on school and church grounds as well as within the surrounding Avon Lake neighborhood. Along the course, there will be activities for the students including hula hoops and jumping hurdles.

Organized by the St. Joseph School PTO, this year’s Walk-a-Thon will raise money to further enhance the school’s science curriculum, which includes programs like last summer’s Science Enrichment Camp for 8th graders.

Funds are raised by students who send letters to family, friends and neighbors asking them for a one-time sponsorship in support of Catholic education. Businesses and corporations are also able to sponsor the event. Corporate sponsorship includes multiple levels of donations and the opportunity to have a  company’s name printed on the t-shirts worn by walkers.

Last year’s inaugural Walk-a-Thon raised over $29,000 which went towards the completion of ActivBoard installations in the classrooms and the purchase of additional laptops for the students.  Over 400 people walked the day of the event sponsored by 850+ donors from across the United States and overseas.

“This is a safe and fun way to raise money for St. Joseph School and to involve the entire student body and staff.  By mailing letters, it eliminates children from having to go door to door selling items,” explains Anne Persiani, Walk-a-Thon Committee Chairperson. “The event also promotes fitness and gets the kids moving.  Last year’s course was approximately .5 miles long, and with the exception of grades K-1, students walked approximately two miles during the event.”
