SJS Students Learn the Value of Service

The mission of St. Joseph Parish School is straightforward: To create disciples of Christ, to be His hands, voice and heart in the world.

To accomplish the school mission, students participate in projects throughout the school year that allow them to learn the value of service by experiencing it firsthand.

Each year students are presented with countless opportunities to give of their time, talent and treasure. From assisting the poor and the sick, to supporting our military, to working on be- half of the environment, students continue to grow as stewards of our faith.

Along with participating in enriching service opportunities, St. Joseph School raises thousands of dollars annually to support its mission.

  • Girl scouts conduct an annual collection for the juvenile detention center in Chicago, sending hundreds of items to the youth including hygiene products
  • After Halloween, students donate hundreds of pounds of candy to area shelters
  • A variety of items are collected and sent overseas to our troops
  • Each year in November the entire school participates in collecting nonperishable food items to help our parish’s St. Vincent de Paul society stock its shelves for thanksgiving. Our “day of writing” raised money to purchase turkeys for the St. Mary’s food pantry in Lorain
  • Our school hosts the sale of items made at St. Monica’s tailoring school, part of the tree of wisdom mission in Uganda. The sale includes handmade jewelry, bags and purses. All proceeds are donated directly to the mission
  • Seventh and eighth grade students visit schools in Cleveland to provide Christmas parties for the students. Each child receives a present and treats are provided for a party
  • Sixth grade students participate in the parish’s giving tree program to provide Christmas gifts to a family in need
  • Throughout the years our students have participated in fundraising for various charities including the annual “pennies for patients drive” for the leukemia and lymphoma society; “jump rope for heart” for the American heart association; “shamrocks against dystrophy” for the muscular dystrophy association; “Love for Lucas” fundraiser to support children ravaged by Epidermolysis Bullosa; fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen “three day” in support of teacher, Miss Anne Bader
