WELCOME CIRCLE

welcome circle (6.15 x 3 in).png

The Welcome Circle program was created in response to the humanitarian crisis following the outbreak of war in Ukraine in 2022. As millions of Ukrainians were displaced from their homes, the United States launched the Uniting for Ukraine (U4U) initiative, offering temporary refuge through humanitarian parole. In partnership with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Charities, Welcome Circles were formed to provide direct community support to Ukrainian families seeking safety. These parish-based teams of volunteers commit to walking with one family for two years—offering practical assistance, spiritual care, and the warm embrace of a welcoming community.

In August 2023, St. Joseph Parish welcomed the Luzghin family to Avon Lake, Ohio, through this very initiative. Since their arrival, the family has adapted beautifully to life in our community, thanks to the dedication of our parish’s Welcome Circle team and the generosity of many volunteers. The work of accompaniment continues, and we invite you to follow their journey and consider how you might be part of this meaningful ministry.

Welcome Circle Updates

October 31, 2024

On October 27, 2024, Matt Reynolds and Tom Costello represented the Welcome Circle of Saint Joseph Parish and Holy Spirit Parish at the 2024 Annual Peace and Justice Awards Luncheon at St. Mary's Parish in Elyria, Ohio. The purpose for the luncheon was to recognize certain parishes and individuals who volunteered as part of the Welcome Circle in assisting in the resettlement of Ukrainian families in Lorain County. Thanks to the generous outpouring of financial contributions by the parishioners, the time and talent given by the Welcome Circle volunteers, and the support provided by the St. Joseph and Holy Spirit pastors and staff, the Luzghin family are now successfully integrated into the Avon Lake community and are doing very well !
Thank you!
